Episode 047: Power20—Combating Negative Self-Talk

October 17, 2018

Negative self-talk does not help us achieve our goals, yet I hear it all the time in my work with my coaching clients and from my peers who are fellow rising leaders. In this Power20 episode, I’m sharing why negative self-talk is so destructive and I equip you with an exercise to flip the script (literally, I share a story about a friend flipping flash cards to combat negative self-talk. Try it!).

I’m choosing to talk about this on the podcast because I am passionate about wellness. I believe in the wellness of our future leaders and I see it suffering all around me. Negative self-talk plays a big role in this.

I also believe that my purpose is to help people achieve their goals. Negative self-talk has no space on the journey to goal achievement. I want to help you get out of your own way, love yourself, and ultimately achieve the things that are beyond your wildest dreams.

Let’s do this!

PLEASE NOTE: There is adult language in this episode. I’ve found that people use a lot of swear words when they talk to themselves. It’s only 1-2 words, but if you are listening with little ones, you may want to use headphones.

In this episode:

  • In your mind, how do you talk to yourself?  (4:38)
  • Tracking your trash talk (7:20)
  • Myth busting: Negative self-talk motivates me (9:23)
  • Flipping the script to motivate yourself and reach your goals (12:17)
  • The exercise, steps 1, 2, 3, and 4 (14:47)
  • A practical application (19:00)
